Artist Biography
Ramona Sakiestewa is one of America’s most influential and innovative artists. She was born of Hopi ancestry and raised in the American Southwest, She is well known for her exquisite, woven tapestries and was self-taught, adapting techniques derived from prehistoric Pueblo weaving. Her works appears in numerous private and public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution. Most recently, she also collaborated with a team of designers, architects and engineers as the lead interior designer for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
Sakiestewa’s tapestries (she also does paintings, monotypes and design work) exhibit a bridge between Modernist concepts and Native American traditions. They frequently display vibrant, abstract markings and geometric elements against a saturated field of color. She has traveled extensively, living and working in New York City, Mexico City, Peru, Japan and China, and has drawn inspiration from each of these places.
