Naha, Rainy – Wide Jar with Old Style Bat Wing Design

7"w x 3.5"h

$ 1,200.00

This wide jar is a fascinating combination of historic imagery and contemporary design.  The pattern around the neck is derived form the pre-historic Sikyatki pottery bat wing patterns.  Moving to the shoulder, there are the classic bat wing designs used by Nampeyo of Hano.  Separating these wide sections are smaller panels with a red triangle and designs, which are pottery shard patterns.   The wide shape is also one inspired by the Sikyatki pottery forms.   Rainy wanted to combine various designs from the centuries of Hopi pottery.  Bringing it together on one piece has created a vary elegant modern appearance yet continues to breath life into the history of this amazing culture!  Rainy uses natural clay slips (bee-weed for the black) and a white kaolin clay.  Each of her pieces is also traditionally fired which gives the white a very pearlescent appearance.  It is signed on the bottom with a feather and “Rainy”.
